In December 1951, Ian Player was the only paddler to complete the first Pistermaritzburg to Durban Duzi Canoe marathon. Since hi epic trip 50 years ago, more than 8000 people have followed in his footsteps and paddle strokes as the race has grown into one of the countries major sporting attractions.
The book also takes a look at how the equipment has changed in the past 50 years; the media coverage has evolved from the point where pigeons were used to send news out of the valley; a few courageous disabled competitors who have finished the race; and finally lists every single person who has completed the race.
